Diego Valiante

Head of Capital Markets Research - Research Fellow

Diego Valiante, Ph.D. is Head of Capital Markets Research at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), where he coordinates the tasks and research of the European Capital Markets Institute. He holds a BSc in Business Economics and a MSc in Law and Economics from LUISS University in Rome, both degrees ‘summa cum laude’. He also earned a joint LL.M. Master in Law and Economics (EMLE) from Hamburg and Bologna University, and in 2010 a Ph.D. in Law and Economics from LUISS University.

As a result of his interdisciplinary background, Diego has published extensively on economics and regulation of financial markets and services, for academic research, specialized policy portals (such as LaVoce and Economonitor) and newspapers. He regularly advises EU institutions and participates to international working groups. His publications have been so far downloaded +50,000 times.

In 2011, Financial News (Dow Jones) listed Diego among the “Top 40 Rising Stars in Trading and Technology” under the age of 40 in the EMEA. In the past (2007), he also worked as intern for the Public Authorities Division of a major investment bank in Canary Wharf, London.

Current research activities. His research activity focuses on trading and transparency of financial instruments (MiFID and EMIR), financial markets structure and institutional aspects of the Eurozone crisis and central banking. He has recently advised the European Commission and the European Parliament. Diego has also assisted the Qatar Central Bank to restructure the financial framework of the country and the Qatar Financial Markets Authority to set its new strategic plan. Finally, he is coordinator of a consortium in charge of delivering support to ESMA in drafting the impact assessment of MiFID II/MiFIR level 2 rules.
